Signwaves’s ‘eco-design’ Litter Bin for Unilever (Wall’s) was recognised with a Gold award for Innovation at the British POP Awards 2007.
The solution addressed and solved costly storage and distribution issues through compact design and provides a ‘front of store’ brand presence at the point of purchase.
Its key design features include:
· Overall silhouette of an ice cream – ‘semantics by shape’
· An aperture height inviting use by children & adults
· Small footprint & soft corners – safe as a piece of street furniture
· Original & unique appearance
· Promotes litter reduction & thereby benefit to the environment, giving the retailer ‘POS with purpose’
Eco-design principles include:
· Use of low impact materials
· Use of recycled materials
· Use of recyclable materials
· Reduction of weight (express quality through good design rather than over-dimensioning the product)
· Reduction in transport volume - the bin components nest within each other to optimise reduction of volume and therefore reduce packaging costs, shipping costs, storage costs at the distribution centre, and also onward distribution costs.
This design achieves 18 bins per pallet, equating to a 70% reduction in road transport usage over the previous solution - of benefit to both the environment and Unilever - as well as a 70% reduction in storage needs as a result.
Additionally, 75% of the bin’s structure uses recycled materials; the remaining 25% is recyclable. The bin can also be dismantled into its separate component materials in under a minute, for easy end of life breakdown.
